Manufactured and delivered: 10t of boiler supporting structures

Delivering in urgency! We are flexible and when we have a new project on the table – we take it and do what’s important to deliver the best quality on time.

Recently Nord Steel received an urgent inquiry for manufacturing 10t of boiler supporting structures for a Danish project. Even though it looked that all production slots are booked out, we managed to reorganize our production schedule and include unexpected workload in it.

The project was completed in just over two weeks, including C4 coating, EXC3, delivery arrangements and all of the administrative work.

Even though we had limited time, quality requirements have not been compromised: products were checked by various quality inspections.  NDT was performed by the notified body and the whole manufacturing process was controlled by an independent auditor.

Though the scope of the project was not substantial in comparison to our average production projects, but this one was extraordinary because of the pressure to deliver fast and in the top quality.


Manufactured and delivered: 5,7t Combustion Air Humidifier

Earlier this autumn we manufactured, packed and waved goodbye to the combustion air humidifier. The unit was made from AISI 304 / 316 stainless steel. It is 8,5m high with an inner diameter of 3,5m, weighting 5,7t. The humidifier was safely delivered to Finland.

Here at Nord steel we are always taking special care of our stainless-steel products and their safe delivery to the clients. The humidifier was wrapped in a special film to protect its pickled and passivated surface from any external impacts. We are glad to hear it reached its destination in perfect condition.


Manufactured and delivered: 13t of Mill Duct, Filter Exhaust & Stack Equipment

Nord Steel has recently completed a second project for the food industry in its history, with a volume of 13t. The project consisted of two separate parts Mill Duct (5t) and Filter Exhaust/Stack (8t) and was delivered to Italy.

The main challenge and distinguishing feature of this project was the inside coating. Since the equipment will be used in food industry, the inner parts of ducts could not be covered with primer as usual. If the primer was to come off at some point in the future, it would start to crumble and leach into the food products. Therefore, it was decided to use a perfectly harmless substance linseed oil, which was applied on inner parts of the products protecting them against the rust.

If we continue to receive such orders, maybe it is worth thinking about opening an oil shop inside the factory?


Successfully installed metal construction in Latvian cement plant

Starting from July 2021 Nord Steel has joined the construction and modernization project of the Broceni cement plant in Latvia, recently acquired by Schwenk company – one of the oldest family companies in the German building materials industry.

Nord Steel is responsible for silos modification works and the installation of metal structures at the cement plant. Recently, we reached one of the most important milestones of this project and after only a couple of weeks, we are reaching the final closure.

The photos below show how the assembled upper gallery, connecting the old building to the new one, is being lifted into place. What makes this project unique is that the modification of the gypsum silo in the old building had to be done in 4 days, during a shutdown, so the team worked day and night in two shifts. This was a great example of dream teamwork.

It has been almost a year since the beginning of the construction of the new cement mill and silo. During this time, the silo building has grown to 60 meters and the cement mill has acquired a solid shape. The project is planned to be fully operational until the end of 2021.


Ducts & Hoppers for Recovery Pulp Mill Boiler in South Africa

Nord Steel had the privilege to manufacture ducts and hoppers for the recovery pulp mill boiler, located in South Africa. Quite a long way from Lithuania, (Europe) where we do all the magic.

Packaging of our deliverables is a very delicate process, and it is even more important when the final destination is on the other side of the globe.

Every part of the ready-to-go products has to be packed into containers – lots of containers. Here’s a shout out to Nord Steel packaging team – very experienced guys, who work in the most efficient way so that the deliverables reach the final destination without a scratch.

Ducts and hoppers are a part of industrial boiler accessories providing support as a water-cooling wall. These parts have no tolerance for any deformation or even a slight shape alteration, therefore secure packaging and safe transportation is as important as the precise manufacturing itself.


First time in Spain: 170t of Carbon Steel Ducts and SCR Reactor

If we had to name one item that Nord Steel manufactures the most – ducts would definitely be our first mention. Even though we are familiar with various ducting systems and their manufacturing specifics, some projects are exceptional and will never be forgotten.

Here’s an example of our biggest (more than 170t to be exact) ducts and SCR reactor manufacturing project. In addition to its size, there was one more extraordinary feature that made this project stand out. Our client requested for a special heat and corrosion-resistant coat to be applied for all manufactured parts. Such aluminum-based coating system increased the project price by 50 %!

All the manufactured items were successfully delivered to a flue gas treatment plant in Spain. This was the project that made

Nord Steel step into the Spanish market for the first time. Special greetings go to our great project team who always finds solutions in any situation.


Manufactured and Delivered: 13,5m Stainless Steel Vent Gas Scrubber

Is this a rocket or a spaceship? No, we have not yet entered the space production industry, but the design of this 13,5m stainless steel vent gas scrubber sure does look like one of the kind!

A vent scrubber is an air pollution control device that removes unwanted pollutants from industrial gas streams. By helping keep liquids out of your flare stack, it helps to run a safer and more environmentally responsible gas flare system.

Nord Steel had a rewarding opportunity to produce this unusual-looking gas cleaning equipment for a non-condensable gas treatment system, which was installed in a new pulp mill in Sweden.

Complex design production is what defines the essence of our daily activities – our clients come with very specific needs and our team always brings individual solutions for every situation.


World Environment Day – Time to Review Sustainability Goals

On the occasion of World Environment Day, Nord Steel is reviewing its sustainability goals. As steel manufacturers we are usually surrounded by steel structures, heavy machinery and welding sounds, however – we are devoted nature lovers.

Did you know, that steel is the most recycled industrial material in the world? Here at Nord Steel more than 95 % of waste is fully recyclable. By 2025 our team is determined to increase this rate to more than 99 %. In addition, we are investing in production efficiency aiming to use at least 95 % of raw material, leaving only 5 % for recycling after the production.

Here’s what we also do in order to make our planet healthier and happier:

  • We continuously look for ways to cut energy consumption per ton of steel produced
  • We invest in more efficient and environmentally friendly machinery park
  • We adopt new technologies for innovative steel production that is light and durable

Manufactured and delivered: Gas Cleaning Equipment including 66m Height Wet Stack

Gas cleaning equipment probably makes the biggest share in Nord Steel manufacturing projects, and we are always very excited when our team creates something great by all means.

Last year Nord Steel was awarded a project to manufacture a complex gas cleaning solution. We were responsible for manufacturing wet stack, scrubber, bisulfite storage tank and various pressure vessels.

The wet stack was impressive: 3 flanged segments in total made it 66m height, with a diameter of 2m. Nord Steel also manufactured stainless inner parts and service platforms for the stack.

The most challenging part of the project was welding. Welding quality was assured by trial fit assemblies, which played a crucial role in reaching the precise quality of the product.


Nord Steel coating department: 1400 m2 inhouse workshop and limitless facilities outside

Steel manufacturing process usually never ends up with welding. Approximately 90% of Nord Steel products manufactured in our own steel workshop take a step into the surface treatment area.

Steel coating includes polishing, brushing, blasting, etching and coloring touches. Selecting the right surface treatment is important in determining the corrosion resistance of the stainless steel surface.

More than 1400 m2 of indoor steel workshop at Nord Steel is dedicated exclusively to coating activities. For instance, shot-blasting is performed in two separate shot-blasting chambers, giving the possibility to indoor shot-blast products of up to 5m in diameter, 20m in length. Not to mention limitless painting facilities outside. All the operations are strictly supervised by an experienced coating engineer or FROSIO inspector.
